SUMMARY:Oregon Growers Food Safety Training and Education
DESCRIPTION:Following a 2011 E. coli related outbreak of illnesses and one death attributed to consumer purchases of fresh Oregon strawberries\, Oregon berry industries are working together to minimize future berry related foodborne illnesses. They are sponsoring 2012 season food safety training for any Oregon produce growers and berry harvesters\, regardless of farm size. Oregon’s produce industry want consumers to feel confident that farmers are doing everything they can to ensure they are providing the healthiest and safest produce. Any foodborne illness associated with Oregon produce has the potential to drastically affect growers of any size as well as processors using that product. Take advantage of a 3-hour program providing food safety training designed to appeal to all farmers\, and farms: Attendees are expected to share training information\, with additional study guides\, with their harvest crews\, large and small wholesale\, harvest crews\, managers\, and labor contractors. Training will be based on the California Strawberry Commission Food Safety Practices for Strawberry Harvest Workers™ study guide\, which will be provided. THERE IS NO COST TO THE ATTENDEES. Each training site will conduct a morning class in English followed by an afternoon class in Spanish. For dates and locations of classes in other areas and to register for a class see this form and contact Chuck Leonard.

DESCRIPTION:Got Dirt? Well\, then\, Soil School 2012 is right up your alley! In what we hope will be a regular event\, West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District has scheduled a day for all gardeners\, food and other agricultural farmers\, landscapers\, grounds managers and more to learn about improving the health of their soil. When: Saturday\, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Where: Friendly House\, Keeston Room\, 1737 NW Thurman Street\, Portland Cost: $10 per person or $15 for a family (lunch will be provided!) Let this be the last Portland area winter that you have to deal with erosion\, poor drainage and other damage caused by soil issues. Whether you live on a hill or not\, there are many things landowners can do to protect their dwellings\, stabilize slopes\, redirect or capture rainwater\, and use native plants to soak up more water runoff. Two workshop tracks will deal with Soil Productivity and Soil Stability. Attendees will learn how to assess the health of their soil\, test it and restore its productivity for gardens and crops of all kind. Experts will also teach attendees how to naturescape for erosion and sedimentation\, mitigate landslides and manage stormwater runoff. Please register early online at www.wmswcd.org. Click on “Events\,” fill out the form for Soil School\, print it out and mail it in with your check. For more information\, please call WMSWCD Rural Conservationist Scott Gall at 503/238-4775\, ext. 105 or email at scott@wmswcd.org. To see an informational flyer\, click here.

SUMMARY:"Soil to Spoon" Stewardship Week
DESCRIPTION:In 1955\, the National Association of Conservation Districts began a national program to encourage Americans to focus on stewardship. Stewardship Week is officially celebrated from the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in May. It is one of the world's largest conservation-related observances. The program relies on locally-led conservation districts sharing and promoting stewardship and conservation activities. Districts provide conservation and stewardship field days\, programs\, workshops and additional outreach efforts throughout their community to educate citizens about the need to care for our resources. Many district activities extend beyond the one week observance to include an entire year of outreach. The Stewardship concept involves personal and social responsibility\, including a duty to learn about and improve natural resources as we use them wisely\, leaving a rich legacy for future generations. One definition of Stewardship is "the individual's responsibility to manage his life and property with proper regard to the rights of others." E. William Anderson suggests stewardship "is essentially a synonym for conservation." Stewardship Week helps to remind us all of the power each person has to conserve natural resources and improve the world. When everyone works together with their local conservation district\, that power continuously grows. We have seen these good deeds multiply across the nation's network of conservation districts and the results are spectacular! When the land does well for its owner\, and the owner does well by his land—when both end up better by reason of their partnership—then we have conservation. - Aldo Leopold

SUMMARY:Food Safety for Farms and Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Do you grow food for the consumption of others as a small farmer\, school or food bank garden coordinator? Is food safety a concern? Clackamas Community College is offering an introductory workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) tailored to the concerns of small\, locally distributing growers. Come and learn about the national food safety program and how you can begin to implement these practices into your operation. This is a workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs)\, a national certification program designed to help growers implement food safety practices. Our half-day workshop will serve as an introduction to GAPs for the small-scale farmer or gardener\, covering some of the unique challenges they face in meeting these national standards. Given recent attention both locally and nationally to food-borne illness\, it is increasingly important to incorporate food safety practices into your farm or garden's operations in order to protect your customers and the viability of your business or organization. As part of the workshop\, an Oregon Department of Agriculture representative will be presenting and answering questions on GAPs implementation and certification. The objectives of this workshop are to: Learn the basic principles of GAPs food safety standards Evaluate the quality of food safety practices on your farm or in your garden Understand the resources available online and through local agencies to help you improve your food safety practices Preregistration is required to attend. Please contact Sarah West at sarahw@clackamas.edu or (503) 594-3716 for registration instructions or other inquiries.

SUMMARY:Free Pollinator Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators are essential to our environment. Pollinating bees\, butterflies and birds are critical for the reproduction of nearly 70% of the nation’s flowering plants\, including over two-thirds of the world’s crops. The economic value of pollinators to our agricultural production is about $3 billion a year in the U.S. Loss of habitat and the misuse of pesticides has severely harmed the number of pollinators today. Join local plant and insect experts to learn about the concepts of pollinator plantings\, what to plant for specific species and how to group them together in hedgerows for greater impact. A guided tour will cover urban (Montgomery Park) and rural plantings (Sauvie Island) and information from: - Mary Logalbo\, Urban Conservationist\, West Multnomah SWCD - Kathy Pendergrass\, Plant Materials Specialist\, NRCS Transportation will be provided but seats are limited so those interested are urged to register by checking “Events” at www.wmswcd.org and filling out the online form. For more information about the tour\, call Mary Logalbo at WMSWCD; 503/238-4775\, ext. 103 or mary@wmswcd.org. More information at http://www.wmswcd.org
